Well written and interesting Louise. not that I am biased being the mum of this incredible writer. I totally agree with Nicole. speaking from experience, yes you are a woman first but the milestones in the life of your children are worth talking about even when they become adults as you never stop being a mum but as you said things need to be kept in perspective. Love reading your articles so keep writing....

Interesting Louise... becoming a mum can change you in ways you can never imagine... Sometimes good & sometimes bad - I have found that stay at home mums tend to only talk about their kids (a massive generalization I guess & I don't mean to offend).

I think it's important to keep part of yourself as yourself... I'm
Nicole first, a wife & mother are part of me but it doesn't define me.

Substitute the name of a child for someone's job (say an architect) & if they only talked about what they designed blah blah blah they would be equally as boring as the mummy that talks about their offspring.

Being a young mother, i do see alot of this in me, my friends that have babies and children also.
It is hard when your not at work, you socialise with your child, as most of your friends are working or looking after their children. So yeah most of the time your conversations do revole around the little bundle you spend every waking moment tending to, feeding, bathing and changing. You get lost in the cycle, i start talking to my partner like he is our 7month old baby. i think most parents are like this because our life is consumed by our children, dont get me wrong i do still go out and have a baby free night and live like a "normal" 20 year old i try not to talk about the baby thats at home that i miss like crazy, not being able to put her to bed, the body clock when it hits feed time checks the watch then the phone for the msg to say she has eaten and is now asleep.

sop i guess what im trying to say is, we are proud and sometimes if your not working thats all you know.

Thank you for this post. It was heartening to hear some one reiterate my own thoughts virtually word for word. Sometimes I feel quite isolated in my perception of what is not just offensive to women, but offensive to human decency. Every aspect of what you said resonated.

I was so offended by this film and the scenes you are referring to that I turned it off with disgust. Disgust that it ever made if past the drawing board and even more horrified that Jennifer Anniston (whom I'd previously admired) took on the role.

Wow I was just thinking about some of the concepts mentioned in this the other day ! I think in our fast paced lives, eating while catching up with friends is like hitting 2 birds with one stone. Most people are time poor, so why not eat and catch up with a friend too !! But, it does seem that no one takes the time to reaaallly enjoy a coffee these days its all go go go....
