Supermarkets at war:

Where You Should Really Lend Your Support
Coles and Woolworths are currently getting down and dirty by upping their adverts and slashing prices. This may sound great for consumers, but not for the ones who care about what they consume!
The two big name supermarkets are more preoccupied in spending more money on advertising and marketing…The result? There’s an increase in purchasing cheaper, overseas produce which means a decrease in freshness and quality.
But you don’t have to support Coles or Woolworths and the battle between supermarkets! You can get savoury foods and still save money! All you have to do is support your local farmers!
Supporting local farming is nothing but a win-win situation. By supporting local farming you are doing so many great things for yourself, the economy and the environment.
Local food is better for you:
When you support local farming you are eating what’s in season, the healthiest way to eat! Plus you are guaranteed fresher produce with less chemicals and pesticides because the focus is quality over shipping and shelf life.
Local food is better for the economy:
When you support local farming, you are keeping dollars within the region instead of sending it to distant corporations. This helps build the regional communities and keep the farmers from losing their jobs!
Local food is better for the environment:
When you support local farming, you are getting food from a shorter distance. This reduces carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials.
Supporting local farming isn’t difficult. In retrospect it can be easier and actually more enjoyable. Who doesn’t enjoy going to farmers markets? They are fun outings for the weekend. For the more adventuresome, take a drive out of the city to the rural areas and you can find farmers selling their produce right from their homes! If you can’t make it to a farmer’s market nor fancy a trip, then there are delivery services that are direct from the farmers and are actually more affordable than you think! Whole Food Central or Fruit n Vegie Direct are two services just too name.
FemmeFile readers, how do you support local farming?

This is great – I have always wanted to support local growers – but I don’t know how. When I go to my local grocer, I can see that the produce is coming from everywhere. I live in Sydney – where can I go to get the local stuff?
