Not all Water is Created Equal

Some fast facts from the Femme Files today: If you are drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water a day, give yourself a pat on the back. But if that water is coming solely from the tap, keep that hand right by your side.

Don’t fret. Tap water is not harmful to consume. However, by the time it reaches our faucets it has been extensively treated with many different chemicals and minerals. High consumption overtime can adversely affect your body.

One mineral that tap water is particularly high in is copper.  This may not sound like a bad thing as copper is an essential trace element that our bodies need in small amounts. In fact, our bodies need a balance of all the essential trace elements. But when we consume too much of one mineral, it can deplete another. Case in point: drinking tap water daily can increase copper levels in the body which depletes zinc levels. The importance of Zinc is a long list, but for aesthetic purposes (which we only care about anyway) it is an essential element for skin health. So if you thought that drinking heaps of water was helping your skin, it won’t if it is coming through the tap.

Don’t sabotage your health efforts by drinking tap water. But don’t sabotage your bank account by purchasing bottled water, either. The most simple and effective, not too mention environmentally-friendly option is to purchase a water filter. There are numerous water filters available, perhaps some better than others, but Brita is probably the most reasonable and will get the job done.

Now all you have to do is buy one of those cute and trendy BPA-free water bottles and you’ll really be getting the most out of your daily drink.
